The Lake & Black Swans
The lake was dug out of marshy land in 1992 and some of the soil was used to create an island. The overflow of water from nearby mine shafts and underground streams ensures that a fast running supply of water is available, even in drought years
.
There are two lovely black swans on the lake, one being a rather recent acquisition to replace a cob that unfortunately died towards the end of a period of incubating eggs. The cob does most of the sitting; twenty out of the thirty days needed. So far, the new cob has not been accepted by the pen but it will be interesting to see how the relationship progresses. A wire fence ensures that the swans are confined.
